Weltverbesserung

In einer kurzen Pause zwischen zwei Schichten in den finsteren Beweisminen fiel mein Blick auf Holgers Polemik, die mich daran erinnert, dass ich schon länger mal den Chomsky¹ ausgraben wollte. Den, beziehungsweise ein Zitat von ihm, das ich vor längerem fand; nicht zu den weichen Fächern⁰ allgemein, sondern zu Postmodernismus und -strukturalismus:

I have spent a lot of my life working on questions such as these, using the only methods I know of; those condemned here as “science”, “rationality”, “logic” and so on. I therefore read the papers with some hope that they would help me “transcend” these limitations, or perhaps suggest an entirely different course. I’m afraid I was disappointed. Admittedly, that may be my own limitation. Quite regularly, “my eyes glaze over” when I read polysyllabic discourse on the themes of poststructuralism and postmodernism; what I understand is largely truism or error, but that is only a fraction of the total word count. True, there are lots of other things I don’t understand: the articles in the current issues of math and physics journals, for example. But there is a difference. In the latter case, I know how to get to understand them, and have done so, in cases of particular interest to me; and I also know that people in these fields can explain the contents to me at my level, so that I can gain what (partial) understanding I may want. In contrast, no one seems to be able to explain to me why the latest post-this-and-that is (for the most part) other than truism, error, or gibberish, and I do not know how to proceed. (Quelle)

But from 50 years in this game, I have learned two things: (1) I can ask friends who work in these areas to explain it to me at a level that I can understand, and they can do so, without particular difficulty; (2) if I’m interested, I can proceed to learn more so that I will come to understand it. Now Derrida, Lacan, Lyotard, Kristeva, etc. —- even Foucault, whom I knew and liked, and who was somewhat different from the rest —- write things that I also don’t understand, but (1) and (2) don’t hold: no one who says they do understand can explain it to me and I haven’t a clue as to how to proceed to overcome my failures. That leaves one of two possibilities: (a) some new advance in intellectual life has been made, perhaps some sudden genetic mutation, which has created a form of “theory” that is beyond quantum theory, topology, etc., in depth and profundity; or (b) ... I won’t spell it out.

Als Ratgeber zum Thema Zufallszahlen rate ich übrigens eher zu Mathema- oder Informatikern (Strukturwissenschaftlern!) als zu Physikern oder Biologen, man befragt mich ja auch nicht zum Thema Quantenbakterien.

¹ Mein katalanischer Mitbewohner, damals dort unten in Spanien, studierte Public Relations und kannte Chomsky nur als Anarchisten, nicht als Urgestein der Linguistik oder alphabetisch ersten Namensgeber der Chomsky-Schützenberger-Hierarchie [2] . Ihr, werte schweigende Massen, wisst hoffentlich von beiden Aspekten und kennt Chomsky hoffentlich als beides und nicht nur als Typen auf einem Plakat in der Wohnung von Paris und Doyle (“Jonathan”).
